“Oh, what lovely kittens!” Bell said. “What should we call them, Lucky?”

“I think we should call the pink- oh they’re all pink! I think we should call that one-“Lucky pointed to the kitten in the middle-“Cookie and that one”- he pointed to the one on the outside-“Sunny,” Lucky mewed. “What do you think we should call the other three?”
“Those are wonderful names, Bell!” Lucky purred. Bell felt a purr rise in her throat. One of the kittens scurried away with its eyes still closed. She wrapped her tail around it and pulled it back.
“Oh what beautiful kittens,” a voice said.
Another cat was in their barn!
“Who’s there?” Bell mewed, scared as a mouse when it’s being stalked.
“Oh don’t be afraid, I won’t hurt your kits. I’m a traveler and I come in peace,” It said. “I am Pearl. What are your names?” Pearl said.
“Relax. I am a friend, your names please?” Pearl mewed again.
“Why do you need to know?” Lucky asked.
“It would make me feel safer than I am right now.” There was a long pause and Pearl said”, if you’re not going to tell me your names then I might as well be going.”
“We are Bell and Lucky and our kits are Lion, Smokey, Cookie, Sunny, and Star,” Bell said.
Lucky gave her a questioning look. Bell gave Lucky a look that said ‘I know what I’m doing.’ Lucky gave a nod.
“You are welcome to hunt in our barn if you like. It looks like snow’s coming tonight,” Bell mewed.
“That’s very kind of you, but I’m sure it’s not snowing right now and I don’t want to bother your kits and you.”
As Pearl said that, she looked out the window and saw that the ground was already piled with snow.
“Of course I could sleep here for the night I suppose. And hunt,” she said. “So, Lion, Star, Smokey, Sunny, and Cookie, is it?” Pearl meowed.
She took three steps towards the kits and Lucky let out a growl. Pearl let out mrroww of laughter when Bell smacked him with her tail.
“I can see you are very fond of each other,” Pearl said.
“Why do you think we had kits?” Lucky meowed.
“Do you mind if my friend comes here too? He’s with The ones that walk on two right now,” Pearl asked.
“The ones that walk on two? What are they?” Lucky asked.
“I think she means no-furs, Bell,” Lucky mewed. “And yes we do mi-“Lucky was cut off.
“Of course we don’t mind!” Bell said.
One of the kits mewled out loud and scurried towards Pearl. Bell picked it up and started to wash it.
“If you and your friend try to take our kits anywhere….” He trailed off.
“Lucky! What makes you think she would do that?” Bell asked.
But she was beginning to wonder herself whether they and their kits were safe any longer. “What if Lucky is right? What if our kits aren’t safe anymore?” She thought. Pearl tore through her thoughts,
“By the way my friend’s name is-“I’m Taz,” he said from the shadows. Bell held back a scream. Taz’s muzzle was scarred and he had bruises all over his body. Even on his belly!
“Wow! That’s a relief. Most cats scream when they see me. I’m glad you two are different,” Taz meowed.
“What happened to you? Did you attack a horde of no-furs!?” Bell exclaimed.
“What are no-furs?” Taz asked confused.
“What happened to you?” Bell repeated ignoring Taz’s question. “You don’t want to know. Trust me,” Taz said wide-eyed.
“Oh, who are these lovely kits?” Taz stepped forward and Lucky stood in front of Bell and growled. Taz took a couple steps back.
It had been one sky and a half since Pearl and Taz moved into the barn. Bell and Lucky had grown used to them in the barn and asked them to stay, but they said they had to be off. They didn’t tell them why though. “I wonder why they had to go?” Lucky mewed.
Unexpectedly Pearl appeared out of nowhere.
“Oh my gosh! Lucky! Bell! You have to help me and Taz!” Pearl exclaimed wide-eyed. Bell let out a howling scream.
“What happened to you?” Bell yelled.
Pearl was like fur on bones. Her fur was torn, some of her tail was missing, and could easily be mistaken for Taz. She sat down and began to say something.
“It’s time to tell you what happened to Taz. But not yet. First you have to help us.”
Pearl didn’t wait for them to follow. She ran off leaving Bell to look after the kits while Lucky went off to help Taz and Pearl.
“Are you sure you’ll be alright?” Lucky asked.
“I’ll be fine. I promise,” Bell mewed.
Lucky went with Pearl and found Taz on the ground not moving, not even breathing. Lucky could see he few more scars to add to his collection, he wondered what had happened to them. Pearl and Lucky started to lick him and in a few seconds they saw his chest rising and falling.
“Come on, let’s get him back to the barn,” Lucky said. They picked him up and carried him to the barn.
However, when they got there Bell was nowhere to be seen. The kits had their eyes open by now and were mewling for their mother.
“Star, what happened to- Star? Star where are you?” Lucky asked worried.
“I-I’m here. It w-was sc-scary,” Star said with real fear.
“These things with no fur came and took her away from us,” she said.
“No-furs! No-furs did this! Bell!” Lucky screamed out her name and stalked around where her scent was, as he lashed out his tail angrily.
“I’ll flay and mince the no-furs! I’ll do it over and over again to each and every one of them! I’ll be merciless!” Lucky howled.
The kits and Pearl and even Taz seemed to be shocked by his anger. “Come on we’re hunting no-furs tonight,” Lucky said.
“I don’t know, I mean the no-furs that were here didn’t seem hostile, they actually said kind things to her and pet her. They didn’t hit or kick her like some no-furs do,” Smokey mewed.
“That doesn’t mean she didn’t bite and kick them though,” Sunny said.
“Yes. I think they were her old no-furs,” Lion meowed. “I don’t care. I want to see the no-furs dead right now!!” Lucky meowed.
“Bell would hate you,” Pearl retorted. “By the way, I said I would tell you the thing that happened to Taz,” Pearl mewed.
“Not until we have found Bell,” Lucky said.
“We agree. If we have nightmares tonight Bell won’t be here to comfort us like she usually does,” Cookie mewled.
“We’ll help you find Bell, Lucky,” Taz said.
“We will? I mean we will,” Pearl mewed.
“Where should we look first?” Taz asked.
“How about the stoneyard? There are lots of The ones that walk- I mean, no-furs over there.
Or the dirthouse?” Pearl suggested.
“I think we should check where her no-furs used to keep her as a pet. By the blackgrounds,” Lucky meowed.
“Bell! Bell, are you there?” Pearl whispered. As they got closer they heard purring. It sounded like Bell! “What? Huh, it’s just a stray cat being pet by a no-fur!” Lucky thought. Suddenly he heard a hiss and a yowl from a no-fur, it might be Bell!
There it was again. A hiss! “Bell! Bell! Where are you Bell?” The scarred tabby, Taz, asked.
“Huh? Who’s there? What are you goi- Lucky! Pearl! Taz!” Bell said as looked out the window of a no-fur barn.
“How do we get you out of there, Bell?” Pearl asked.
“Ummm…. Let me think. Ohh! There’s a door at the bottom of the barn. If you can get the no-fur to open it up then I might be able to escape!” Bell mewed excitedly.
“How do we do that? Start meowing?” Lucky joked.
“Yes that’s s good distraction for the no-furs!” Bell exclaimed.
They all started to meow. When nothing happened they started again; louder this time. Still nothing happened so they all took deep breaths and screamed the loudest they could scream. That should get the no-furs up and- hey! They aren’t doing anything! Urrggh! Lucky thought.
“Hey I have an idea. What if we pound on the door with our bodies?” Taz wondered out loud.
“Yes that would get their attention! On three! One… Two… Three… Now!” They all slammed into the door at the same time. They all groaned. “Nothing!” Lucky thought.
“Wait! Look it! The window- it’s open!” Taz meowed.
“So?” Pearl asked.
“So we could get something under the window for her to jump on!” Taz said.
“Or she could just jump out of the window,” Lucky retorted making Taz embarrassed.
