Pearl had now found Taz and she had an idea on how to get him out. He would act like he had to go to the bathroom, so the no-fur would open the door and they run away. The only problem was how could she get his attention? She began to tap on the window and soon Taz’s face appeared.
She told him to open the window with sign language. They had learned it, in case of emergencies, and this was definitely an emergency. He nodded and he opened the window with his paws with the help of Bell. She just realized, now he could jump out of the window.
Just then, the no-fur started shouted and startled Taz into jumping out the window.
“Hold on! I’m coming too!” it was Taz’s sister.
They ran off into the woods in search of their companions.
“Kits! I’m so glad you found us!” Bell yelled.
“Do you smell that? It smells like Taz and Pearl!” Star mewed.
She was right. There was scent of Taz and Pearl. They peered out behind a tree and saw Pearl and Taz and someone else.
“It is them!” Cookie purred.
They met up with Pearl and Taz and talked for a while. They figured out that the someone they had seen was Taz’s sister.
What’s that? Who’s there?
Bell thought she heard someone. She was right.
“Do you hear that?” she asked.
Quin and Benny stumbled out from behind the trees and they smelled of fox. They had been in a battle with it too! They were brave! At least everybody was here again.
“So what’s your name again?” Lion asked.
“I’m Taz’s sister, Monkey,” she meowed.
They had been traveling for two hours now with sign of food or water at ALL. The air was dry which had no water in it, and the tree- their leaves were on the ground, giving no protection of prey, so they knew there wasn’t any prey in that tree- or any of the trees for that matter. There were clouds coming into the sky warning them for the coming storm.
“We ought to make camp and get shelter. There’s gonna be a storm. Pearl and Taz- find as much leaves as you can. Bell and Lucky- if you can find any long twigs, bring back as much as you can. Kits? Do you want a job?” asked Monkey.
“Yeah!”
“Yeah!”
“Yeah!”
“Kits- if you can find any really tall- and I mean tall- trees, then come back and tell me, and I’ll follow you to the tree you saw. And I will see if I can find any prey and make a prey pile. Go!”
“Alright, let’s find some leaves! Ooh! There’s some!” Pearl meowed.
“Lucky look how many twigs-huh! How can you have that many already? If you want a competition, you’ll have one!” Bell mewed mischievously.
“Hey guys! Won’t all the trees look big to us? Haha! Hey, look at that one! That one is huge! Let’s go tell Monkey!” Stripes mewed.
By the time everyone had gone back to camp, under the tree the kits had found, there was a big prey pile and a pile of herbs in case of injuries. Monkey was sitting by both of them and grooming herself.
“I wondered when you guys would get back to camp.”
By the time they had finished setting up camp, it had started to rain, and they were all exhausted and tired. Pearl and Taz ate a squirrel, Bell and Lucky ate a blackbird, all eight kits ate a rabbit. Even though they had all eaten, the prey pile was still plentiful. After they ate, they were really sleepy, so they said vopho-ala to the sky spirits, and they slept till midday.
“’Morning! Wake up sleepy heads! Time to go to the animal shelter!” Monkey meowed. “We slept past midday.”
“Who said animal shelter! I’m not going back there!” Taz said bristling.
“Oh Taz. Would you rather go with your sister or your mate.”
“Sorry Monkey, but when I was there, they treated me badly and gave me slop for food. They are like the tacis!” he mewed.
“What’s the tacis? What are you talking about, Taz?” Bell asked him.
“I’ll tell you when we get back to the barn, Bell. Just stay out of this for now, okay?” Turning his attention over to Monkey, he meowed angrily, “Who are you to tell me what to do, Monkey! You’re not my mom, you’re not my mate, and you are most definitely not my sister!” he spat in her face and stalked away, tail up.
Monkey looked furious, but then her look softened, and she started to cry. Soon, everybody followed Taz, and stayed silent.
“Alright everybody! We’re going to cross the blackgrounds right now, so someone carry Sunny!” yelled Bell.
Earlier in the month, Sunny had had her paw run over by a no-fur pet, while she was stuck on the blackgrounds, and broke her paw. Someone always had to carry Sunny across the blackgrounds because she couldn’t even look at one.
“Aren’t you sorry for what you did to your sister? You were kind of harsh, and I think-“
“You think I was harsh? Bell, she’s made me do awful things throughout my life. Stop acting like you know my life, because you don’t!” Taz walked away leaving Bell lying on the ground crying.
“Hey! Taz you come back here and apologize to Bell. She didn’t do anything to you, so stop taking your anger out on everybody else!” yelled Lucky.
Taz sighed. He’s right. I’ve no right to take out my anger on other cats, and…
“I’m sorry Bell. I understand if you want me to leave. I hope you forgive me, and I do suppose I was a little harsh on Monkey, but please don’t ask me to go to Monkey and apologize to her,” Taz replied sincerely.
“Oh do you mean it, Taz? It’s okay then,” Bell mewed softly.
“Are you sure you can trust him, Bell? I mean- he yelled and spat in your face. Are you sure?” he whispered.
“Yes! Of course!” she mewed.
They were padding up the trail and they started to smell a bit more of home. They followed the scent and it led them to the cat town they were in before. They were home!
